The new layout is up!

Finally, after searching thousands of of websites (oh okay, 25 is the rough estimation...), looking for the inspirations to change the design of this one, and gathering those ideas, and putting them into a template that Blogger can understand... it's finally done!

For those of you who notice some similarities of the layout with other website(s), please bear with it and remember: plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery :)

The layout has actually been up for a while now. But it's been lacking some basic navigation of the site's functions, that's been fulfilled by the menu, and with it, the header's design now seemed more balanced. And finally putting the 'recent entries' part with the current layout, which make more sense than the standard Blogger's Archive layout, now the layout is in its final form.

The main menu was created using graphics to prevent inconsistencies between browsers and also making it simply better than standard text links :) One of the troubles in making image links was how to make them look good next to each other. Since I wanted to make each image equal in dimensions, something must be done to the text since longer text took more space than the shorter one, and vice versa. For instance, the links image had the shorter text than the others, so at first, it looked like this:
Notice the space between the text and the down-arrow. When put together with the other images in the menu, this would make the menu odd and inconsistent. So, something had to be done. The ol' Photoshop had a text toolbox that gave many options for the text you're editing. Since we needed to move the text closer to the down-arrow, at first I thought a simple scaling would do:
I set the text scaling to a bigger number, thus moved the text nearer to the down-arrow. But it also made the individual letters more 'fat':

Unfortunately, this made the menu odd with some image had a thin text, while other image had fatter text :( On further probing, I found another option that would suit my need: horizontal tracking. Basically, this option sets the spacing of each letter of the text. Hence, I can move the text closer to the down-arrow, but still maintain the size of each letters. So, I set the option:

And produced the final image that I wanted:

On another note, moving the Bloggers' element from the default location to another custom location was a pain in the ass, because apparently each element could have a setting that could only be set when you're adding the element, but the setting was not included in the HTML layout. For instance, you added an RSS element. When you were adding this, Blogger asked for other information such as the URL of the RSS. But, once done, when checked in the HTML layout, the information was not saved there. Instead, Blogger used other means to save the element additional data. This could prove to be a problem when you want to make another element like that, but customized it to be displayed as you liked. Since it was not made by adding a page element the usual way, no additional data could be added, not even to the HTML layout.

The correct way now, it seems, is to add the page element the usual way, then moving it manually in the HTML layout. Check here and here for more information on Blogger's page elements and the HTML layout.

Well, enjoy the new layout. It's far from perfect, and expect it to be continuously modified :) Now, if only I can figure out how to rotate the header image automatically like that other website...

To tweet or not to tweet...

Buat orang-orang yang kerajingan blog, semua yang berkaitan dengan blog, apapun itu, pasti dicobain. This friend of mine is certainly one of them, so dari dia dimulailah my experiment into another social webapp called Twitter.

Twitter gampang digunakan, dan konsepnya menarik: untuk para bloggers, apa sih yang lebih menarik daripada bisa mengupdate blog kapan saja dan dimana saja, dan sebaliknya, juga bisa tau update-an teman-temannya langsung pada saat diposting?

Jadi, setelah proses sign-up yang cepat dan gampang (love the website layout, by the way, simple & web 2.0 standard layout), mulailah gw ber-tweet ria.

Pada awalnya sih gw ngerasa kok mirip instant messenger lainnya ya, apalagi notificationnya bisa dikirim lewat IM lain seperti GTalk. Lalu, baru sadar, kalo gw baru following/followed oleh 1 orang, ya sama ajalah kayak IM :P Kalo follower/followingnya sudah banyak baru terasa bedanya (1 post langsung ke notify ke semua follower).

Lalu apa bedanya dengan blog biasa, you may ask? Si twitter ini bisa dianggap mini-blogging, wong tiap postingan dibatasi oleh 160 karakter. Kenapa 160? Buat yang ngeh, ini maksimum karakter buat SMS, karena salah satu fitur Twitter adalah bisa tweet (baca: posting) dan di-notify tweet orang yang di-follow melalui SMS.

Update lewat SMS? Mungkin buat beberapa orang, kebayang aja jika nge-follow 20 orang, berapa banyak tuh SMS yang diterima per hari, kalo setengahnya aja rajin nge-tweet :) Tapi, it turned out, orang-orang malah suka tuh diupdate apa yang lagi orang lain lakukan, makanya Twitter langsung jadi hit di UK & US. Bagaimana di Indonesia? I'm still waiting for my cell number to get registered in Twitter, walaupun gw pesimis kalo bakal bisa :)

Jadi, selain pake web browser atau IM, how's a true twitter can post his/her tweet? Well, for those who're lucky enough to have Java-enabled cellphones, selain bisa menggunakan Opera untuk mengupdate lewat website Twitter, bisa juga menggunakan salah satu client-client Twitter yang tersedia. Just google 'twitter java' and you should get links to those apps. Yang baru gw coba adalah TinyTwitter di ponsel istri gw (RAZR V3xx, best phone on the planet after iPhone...) dan berjalan dengan mulus. My friend tried it on her Nokia 3650 but couldn't seem to post the tweet. She had better luck with another app though: Jitter, walaupun menurut gw tampilan TinyTwitter jauh lebih oke. So, YMMV (your milleage may vary) :) Dan sekadar ngingetin aja, aplikasi Javanya tetap pake koneksi data untuk konek ke Internet, so watch those phone bills :)

Apakah Twitter webapp terbaik untuk service semacam ini? Memang ada beberapa saingannya seperti Jaiku dan lain-lain yang menawarkan lebih banyak fitur (posting gambar misalnya), tapi untuk kemudahan sepertinya Twitter masih tetap digemari.

ATM 40th anniversary

In a rather work-related issue, BBC News posted a story about the man who invented the ATM machine. The first one was installed in 1967, in Enfield, North London, in a branch of Barclays.

Although, sans the magnetic tape commonly used now by the ATM cards, first generations of ATM read pre-generated paper instead, which enabled people to withdraw a fix amount (10 pounds back then) of money.

Like all other inventions, the idea for ATM was found while in the bathtub (seriously!). It seems that surrounding yourself in a box of water while relaxing can produce amazing results...

Happy 30th Anniversary, Star Wars!

That's right. Those unforgettable words of 'A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away' first appeared 30 years ago :) I myself have known the saga from my elementary school days, thanks to its great worldwide merchandising (action figures from Ovaltine, anyone?).

Since then, I've always consider myself as a fan of the Star Wars world, although the only collectibles that I have are movie posters and Dark Horse comic books. For those who have known the world from the recent prequels, it is understandable why some people seemed amused when watching the original trilogy (lets face it: no one from the six movies will win Best Actor/Actress in Academy Award).

For me, the great thing about Star Wars is how Lucas manages to keep the world persistent with the many mediums: from movies to comic books, computer games, etc., so fans like me can enjoy the world any way we like.

So happy 30th anniversary Star Wars! Keep the story going, so I can look forward to the 50th anniversary :)

Rate your Googleness

Beberapa waktu yang lalu, ada situs yang menyarankan untuk mencari nama sendiri di Google yang (sori gue lupa nama situsnya). Waktu masih di kampus dulu (kala), believe it or not, links yang dihasilkan memang semuanya mengacu ke diri gue. Don't get me wrong, gue memang tidak punya website atau portal apa pun dan rata-rata linksnya mengacu ke arsip milis :) Tapi orang dimaksud disitu memang gue. Kalo dilihat sekarang sih, memang rata-rata masih mengacu ke gue, tapi ada juga yang bukan (75-25 deh, banyakan gue dong).

Untuk orang yang namanya pasaran sih memang 'tough luck, son!', tapi kalau rajin mencari (atau rajin posting di Inet a.k.a Friendster ;) mungkin bisa dapet reference yang benar-benar mengacu ke diri sendiri.

Kalo boleh nyombong dikit, gue paling senang liat link yang mengacu ke pertanyaan gue ke Bill Gates (katanya sih dijawab secara pribadi). Thank to koran Kompas yang kalo dulu ingat medio 90-an pernah ada rubrik tanya-jawab dengan si pendiri Microsoft ini (nama gue cuma pernah muncul 2 kali di koran, satu yang ini di Kompas, satu lagi di pengumuman UMPTN Pikiran Rakyat hehehe...). Sayang, link pertanyaan gue ini tidak ada yang berbahasa Inggris, yang ada cuma di bahasa Jerman :( Buat yang penasaran bisa lihat translated version-nya disini. Dulu si Bill ini memang idola gue, sekarang ganti jadi duo Larry & Sergey. Sayang Google gak buka office di Indonesia...

Biar lebih afdol coba query nama lengkap dalam tanda kutip. Mencari edo yudhistira menghasilkan 264 links, yang not relatednya banyak. Di lain pihak, mencari "edo yudhistira" menghasilkan 32 links yang not related yang jauh lebih sedikit.

Film Indonesia memang sudah bangkit? (or Nagabonar 2 mini review)

Minggu kemarin gue ama istri nonton Nagabonar (jadi) 2 di Mall Metropolitan Bekasi. Karena sudah diputar di bioskop agak lama, gue pikir bisa sedikit santai nontonnya. Gak taunya, kita malah dapat tempat duduk paling depan(!). Karena gue pikir tanggung udah kesana, jadinya nonton juga.

(Spoiler warning! Kalo belum nonton mending jangan baca :)

Filmnya sendiri sih lumayan lah (gue rate 3.5 out of 5 deh) buat film hiburan, karena masih punya masalah klasik film Indonesia pada umumnya: lack of a good storytelling. Basic ideanya sih udah lumayan oke lah, cuma mengembangkannya menjadi sesuatu yang menarik (baca: tidak 'maksa') itu yang masih perlu dibenahi. Karena kurang pengembangan ini lah side stories-nya jadi kurang menggigit rasanya (love story antara Bonaga dan Monita atau Umar si supir bajaj). Mungkin adegan gantungan di patungnya kelamaan sehingga tidak ada waktu untuk menggali side stories tersebut...

Tapi yang bikin gue terheran-heran minggu kemarin adalah kalahnya superhero Internasional oleh hantu lokal :) Yap, di bioskop kemarin Spiderman 3 cuma 1 studio sedangkan Suster Ngesot sukses diputar di 2 studio. Mungkin orang memang sudah bosan melihat Spidey gelantungan sehingga lebih memilih ditakut-takuti oleh si Suster. Gue kurang tau gimana bioskop-bioskop lainnya, tapi kalau liat disini memang rata-rata Suster hanya 1 bioskop, walaupun yang lainnya tetap saja lebih banyak film lokal ketimbang impornya (di MetMall malah Spidey doang yang impor).

Kemungkinan lainnya memang good timing dari pihak distributor film lokal dimana me-release duluan sebelum banjir summer movies yang biasanya dimulai akhir Mei/awal Juni nanti. Kalau begini terus, ditambah dengan keluarnya film-film seperti Nagabonar 2, kebangkitan kembali perfilman Indonesia mungkin hanya menunggu waktu saja (mungkin lho!)...

As for me, I'll be saving my precious money for Pirates 3, Shrek 3, and Transformers. It's good to have summer season again :)

Definition of Life Imprisonment

Gue sempat kaget karena ternyata banyak orang (paling tidak yang gue kenal) ternyata memiliki persepsi yang salah mengenai definisi 'hukuman penjara seumur hidup'. Walaupun sepertinya ini adalah hal yang trivial, namun pada kenyataannya persepsi orang terhadap hal ini jauh berbeda. Dan kalau yang gue dengar betul-betul terjadi, bahkan nara sumber di televisi pun dapat menyampaikan definisi yang salah.

Hukuman penjara seumur hidup. Kenapa definisinya trivial? Semua orang (sepertinya) pasti tahu kalau ini artinya hukuman yang diberikan kepada seseorang agar dia dipenjara selama seumur hidupnya, dalam pengertian sampai hidupnya tersebut berakhir alias mati. Namun ternyata banyak orang yang salah kaprah dengan mengartikan penjara seumur hidup dengan penjara dengan jangka waktu selama orang tersebut telah hidup. Misalnya Budi berumur 20 tahun pada waktu ia divonis hukuman penjara seumur hidup, maka ini berarti ia dijatuhi hukuman penjara selama 20 tahun(!).

Yang paling mengherankan adalah banyaknya orang yang menganut salah pengertian ini. Sepertinya Depdiknas harus melakukan sidak ke sekolah-sekolah yang mengajarkan salah kaprah seperti ini (rata-rata teman gue yang salah kaprah mengaku mendapatkan pengertian yang salah ini waktu di SMA dulu, bahkan ada yang mengaku dapat dari menonton TV dengan narasumber yang 'terpercaya'!).

Singkat kata, setelah adu argumen tidak jelas, thanks to the help of my friend Cheetz, dengan koneksi orang paham hukumnya yang banyak (kok bisa ya? Jangan-jangan sering butuh nasihat hukum), delik perkaranya sudah jelas. Ya sudah pasti gue yang benar dong, kalo nggak post ini tidak akan di-publish :)

Disini jelas-jelas dibedakan antara 'seumur hidup' dengan 'selama waktu tertentu', dengan pengartian 'seumur hidup' tidak memiliki rentang waktu tertentu (thanks to Ari From Legal Dept for the complete info).

Pencarian di Wikipedia Indonesia tidak memberikan hasil untuk 'hukuman penjara seumur hidup' (hukuman mati sih ada), sehingga gue terpaksa go internasional untuk yang satu ini:

Kalo disini sih memang tidak ada disebut-sebut yang namanya hukuman seumur hidup adalah hukuman dengan rentang waktu umur si terhukum. Kalau periode maksimum untuk hukuman penjara memang ada, tapi tentunya bukan itu maksudnya.
